Tips for a Minimalist Home + bonus: Create Calm in your Home

 
We’ve all heard rules of do’s and don’ts, but in this post I share actual action items to help you climb what may seem like a mountain. I’m no expert, but these have helped me tremendously:

 

  1. In and Out Rule. I’ve shared this one before, but it’s one of the best things I’ve done. In and Out. No, not the fabulously delicious fast-food joint, this rule pertains to ‘stuff’ in your life. For example; 1 in 2 out, or 3 out, or make your own rule. And be honest, when I started out, and had a looooong way to go, my rule was 1 in, 10 out. If bought one dish towel, I would take out ten items from my life – for example, 2 dish towels, 6 articles of clothing, 2 misc. kitchen items = total 10 items.

  2. No Buy month. Try it, you’ll love it. It’s hard when you’re out and about & you see something in the window of a shop and you ‘can’t’ have it. But soooo satisfying at the end of the month, when you know you've met your goal. Basically, how it works is that you resolve not to buy anything for a month (or set your timeline, a week, 10 days-whatever works for you), EXCEPT for groceries and absolute essentials, like toilet paper, replacement bulb, etc. This is helps us get out of the ‘perpetual cycle’ of buying on whim. Get off that hamster wheel!

  3. The Calm Effect. Pick a theme or color scheme that speaks to you. There’s something to be said about the serenity of visually like-themed items. Mental and emotional calm will surely follow.. This is the fun part - decorating your home, & creating calmness at the same time. Added bonus, it'll get easier to let go of things if it doesn't 'go' with the theme you picked for yourself. Double yay! :)

  4. Less is More. The less items you have sitting about the less you need to dust, constantly tidy up (daily!), and take care of in general (mend, fix, etc). Plus the negative space makes your beloved items shine & for you to enjoy more. The one planter on your desk, or the set of tea items on a single tray shines more. Versus a constant clutter you're constantly moving around. 

  5. Create mini-retreats
    Some examples from my home. They can be extravagant like a comfy chair + blanket for reading. Or something simple like a bar of your favorite soap. I have a diffuser in my living room, which I turn on & fill up every morning (with a few drops of essential oil I'm in the mood for). Every time, I walk by, it's like a mini-meditation moment. I ALWAYS have a bar of natural soap by my kitchen sink. EVERY single time I wash my hands, I appreciate the sent. I sometimes swap out different scents between the bathroom sinks, etc. And my favorite is my two himalayan salt lamp. There are many benefits to this nifty little thing (a quick search will reveal several; personally it's helped me sleep better - from 4-5 hours to a full 7-8 hours), and I absolutely love the amber glow in my master bedroom (& livingroom).
